We discuss the ways in which a portfolio-based learning system can be integrated into the classroom and the ways in which such a system promotes student participation. The notebook system raises student awareness and engagement with the material. Ultimately, it promotes independent thinking, problem-solving abilities, and motivation for learning. In our conversation, we talk about techniques we use with the portfolio system, its place in Otemae’s educational philosophy, and the successes we have had with it in our classes.
